Horton Kirby Cricket Club was founded in 1882 and on Saturday 14th July 2007 celebrated its 125th year. Blessed with sunny weather attendance was high throughout the day with many people taking advantage of the hospitality, comfortable seating and competitive cricket. All activities throughout the day were organised by club members, families and friends.
The day started early as the clubs’ colts and their families turned up for an under 11 tournament. The standard was high and competition fierce as teams played against each other to find the victors. The victorious team, South Africa, beat Australia, England and the West Indies in a close fought competition. Medals and certificates were presented by the coaches. The young cricketers and their families stayed throughout the day and enjoyed the afternoon cricket and evening festivities making the most of a fine day.
Dartford Fire Station Crew attended as sponsors of the Under 15 and 16 teams. Thanks to the generosity of Dartford residents who contributed to the Christmas Collection, the teams wore new shirts this season with pride.
Lunch was then organised for past players, former and current club patrons as well as various club sponsors including Green Spice, The Ceramic Tile Company the Dartford Fire Station Crew. Many acquaintances were remade as many former players who had not been to the club for many years were welcomed back to see how the club is developing and thriving.
The afternoon’s entertainment was a six-a-side competition between 4 teams, the Grace Brothers, Health & Safety, Lens marvels and The Spin Doctors.
Showing great commitment, each team batted for 5 overs and everybody bowled one over. The winning team had to show a versatile combination of explosive batting, accurate bowling and energetic fielding. As the day wore on, it was apparent that only the best would succeed. Playing against each to find the two strongest teams, the final was played between the Grace Brothers and Health & Safety. Grace Brothers were the comfortable winners, remaining unbeaten throughout the afternoon, and never once losing their voluminous beards!
Spectators, patrons, players and colts remained throughout the afternoon to enjoy the clubs hospitality, and then stayed on to take part in a barbecue and Disco.
Much credit must go to the day’s organisers, the tireless Gill Bull, Club chairman Mac Costen and the day’s organiser, Brad Bull.
